Sarah Silverman Program

Got back from the Comicon and finally got a chance to draw last night. It's been a long time since I submitted a piece of horror film fanart so I threw Hammer Film's "THE CURSE OF FRANKENSTEIN" into the ol' DVD player and got to work.

This is one of my favorite Hammer films. Not sure why, there isn't much to it, but I love Peter Cushing as the doctor and Christopher Lee makes a creepy looking creature.

While working on Transformers Prime I have had little time to scan in and paint new art. I have a bunch, just hadn't had time to take it to the next level. Maybe I'll post some sketches until time frees up.

So this is an old piece that was done for a comic with Brian Harnois ( GHosthunters). The book never got off the ground but I liked this piece and always wanted to revise it to be a standard monster image. Finally got around to it and added more detail to make it more of the piece I wanted

MINNESOTA ICEMAN

One of the things that had spurred my love for monsters as a kid was the infamous "Minnesota Iceman". A purported 6ft tall bigfoot that was frozen in a block of ice, possibly shot in Vietnam during the war and then smuggled into the US, and then put on exhibit at various carnivals and fairs in the midwest.

As a kid in the late 70's I went with my folks to the Ohio State Fair and saw this thing. It was in a trailer where you paid a quarter and entered to see a "bigfoot in Ice" and the "world's smallest woman". The trailer itself was painted with the images of a hairy bigfoot-type man as well as a nude woman sitting in the palm of a man's hand. How could I pass this up? A BIGFOOT and a naked woman the size of my action figures! Oh yea!

I snuck away from my parents and went to this thing alone. I paid my quarter and entered the trailer. It was freezing as I looked down at a hairy Neanderthal creature frozen in a block of ice. It was so awesome to see this as a kid and it sparked a fascination in bigfoot and all crypto creatures from that day forward. The next part of the trailer was equally as scary as the nude woman I had hoped to see was really a 2ft tall elderly woman with malformed limbs sitting on a pillow and smoking a cigar. She looked me in the eye and it scared me to death.

You can find info on the Minnesota Iceman all over the web with varying tales of its origin and it's authenticity. Wether it was fake or not this thing scared the heck out of me and opened my eyes to the possibility of "real" monsters. State fairs are the best!

I always wanted to do a Batman comic where Gotham had a nuclear meltdown and everyone became a deformed mutant. Not sure why but it seems like it would be a lot of fun to do.

Since this is the dynamic duo I might as well submit the piece as a duo and include a mocked up comic cover.

Got a chance to doodle last night while watching some sci-fi channel movies. I've really just been wanting to draw a gooey zombie and was happy to get some time to sit and do it. I've still been on this blue/red kick lately but pretty happy how this turned out.

The DVD I directed for Disney, "Winnie the Pooh and a Musical Too", hit stores this week. This is a musical based off "My friends Tigger & Pooh" which I have been working on for the past year or more. I am really proud of this, especially the Tigger "bouncing" song, and all the musical numbers. Yea, I know, it's not monsters nor has it any chainsaw scenes, but I think it came out pretty good. If you have kids then please check it out, I think they will like it a lot.

Last year MTV commissioned me to do a hat for their constantly evolving page. I really ended up liking that guy on the left and I made the logo reminiscent of the old stop-motion animated "frankenstein" logo they had in the 80's.

The show I have been directing for Disney is on the air and doing really well in the ratings. Believe it or not, I love working on this show and it is sad it will be coming to a close soon. I directed a musical, yep you read that right, a musical with a full orchestra and everything. This will be released on DVD sometime this spring and has some really fun scenes.

I forgot I had a blog! I'm going crazy.

So I hope to get some more stuff up here soon for those of you who follow blogs. This past year has been crazy for me, directing Winnie the Pooh ( Which I got 2 Emmy Noms including Best Director ), some comics with Rob Zombie, directing a live-action horror project with Don Coscarelli as producer, and trying to find the time to draw the dead things I love so much. Oh yea... and being a good father to my daughter.

This year doesn't look any easier, which I guess is a good thing. I hope to put out a new artbook as well as release the project I am filming now. The footage is looking great so far so I hope this comes out cool.

So lets see if I can stay more on top of this thing this year.

I just got back from a week long business trip in Japan and had a great time and left with a suitcase full of toys and a camera full of pictures. Tokyo is a really great city and has so much to do, I wish I could have spent more time there.

I just wanted to let you all know that the animated music video I did for Rob Zombie will be available on DVD really soon exclusively at Hot Topic stores.

It is a music video for the song "AMERICAN WITCH" and is in the same style as my Codename:Embryo cartoons ( If you are familiar with those). If you have been to a Rob Zombie concert on the current tour you have seen it playing behind the band on a giant screen. This thing is wall to wall monsters! Frankensteins, werewolves, zombies and a naked witch! It is pretty crazy and I'm real proud of it, please check it out.

I'm not sure of the exact release date or how much it will cost but be on the lookout for it any day now.

All Monsters Must Die!

I'm finally getting around to posting some of my movies on YOUTUBE since it doesn't take up my bandwidth.
This is one made for a Channel101.com pilot shot for Comedy Central. I had one week from script to screen to get this thing together and I am pretty happy with the results. It was a tough week but a lot of fun.

This piece was for my 60,000th pageview contest over at deviantart.com. The winner got to pick a b-grade horror movie for me to illustrate some fanart for. The winner picked "NIGHT OF THE CREEPS".

This is a really cool, under-rated movie and I had a lot of fun drawing the insane asylum zomie, the worms, the janitor, the faceless zombie and of course Tom Atkins. I took a few liberties with this one and kind of made a scene I wish was in the movie.

Illustrator/animator/director David Hartman (whose concept art credits include Bubba Ho Tep) seems to have it all figured out, and his solution lies in this carnal compendium of tantalizing flesh and oozing, mammoth monstrosities inked by the maestro of two-dimensional deviancy himself. (Hartman's bio photo on the back cover reveals a grinning, bespectacled, quite diabolical-looking fella.)

The lifeblood of Sideshow Monkey itself is both inspired and, well, quite literally inspired (by past fright favorites). It's a two-tiered collection of straight-up groovy finished pieces and random, fevered sketches where you'll often find a panic ridden soldier trekking across a mishmash of funky fetuses floating in the white void—or, stranger still, a crudely rendered beauty barfing into the mouths of newborn chicks chirping hungrily in their nest. This latter half of Sideshow is a trip into insano-world—Hartman being our Willy Wonka of the weird parading us through a cascade of oafish mummies, cute button-nosed broads bearing guns and zombies. Oh, the zombies. There are plenty of rotting corpses to behold, let me tell you. Gargantuan or pint-sized, flesheaters abound!

If that ain't your thang, Hartman explores just about everything else under the full moon, capturing both classic—Frankenstein's Monster and the Wolf Man are prominent players—and modern fiends. In "Texas Blood" and "Texas Blood 2," Hartman gives us his accurate, amusing portrait of Tobe Hooper's infamous chainsaw family. Peer closer at all his pieces, and you'll find as much going on in the background as there is in the fore.

No film is safe from interpretation either. Return of the Living Dead ("The Living Dead"), Prophecy ("Mercury Bear") and Omega Man ("The Last Man on Earth") all get their loving due with varied color palettes that range from effectively gloomy to carnival-esque. In that vein, wait until you see the freaks Hartman's got up his sleeve. He loves two-faced creeps as much as he loves the ladies who, here, are portrayed as your good old-fashioned, lingerie-wearing victims ("Faces of the Wolf") as well as being just one of the ghouls ("Doorway"). Hartman's way with slender curves and things that go bump in the night is rendered in such a wonderfully cartoonish way, we can all hope he has plans to bring them to animated life someday. Here are a couple new pieces featuring girls and monsters. Yea, I can be pretty unpredictable sometimes.

The first is called "Mutant Graveyard" and was meant to have the feel of one of those romance book covers. The second piece is "Trouble at the Moulin Rouge". After watching the film of the same name I came to the conclusion it needed more zombies and just had to draw it. For every 10,000 pageviews I receive on that site I hold a contest to pick what film I will do fan art for. There was a tie for the 50,000th pageview and the winners picked "Braveheart" ( see below) and "Evil Dead". This is the first piece I've done where I've drawn the entire thing in the computer. It kind of has too slick of a look for my taste so I tried to keep it pretty messy. I think I will always love leaky pens and crappy copy paper over any other medium.

BRAVEHEART CONTEST

Over at my "deviantart" page I hold a contest every 10,000 pageviews. This was for the 50,000 pageview contest and the winner got to pick which film I would do fanart for next. The winner picked the film "Braveheart".

I got to say that I wasn't really into this idea, I'm more of a zombie guy, but the reason I even have the contest is so I'll draw things I wouldn't normally draw.

I kind of like how it came out and it's probably because of all the blood and the liberties with how I depicted the princess.

I have a million stories that I know I will never get into any sort of completion without forcing myself to do it. So I decided to make a comic book that is filled with a bunch of 8-10 page stories. The book will have an overall feel harking back to the horror books of the 70's with a bit of EC comics and a bunch of Archie comics feel to it. I'm not sure why but I'm really into this look right now. I hope to get a few friends also interested in this idea and make the book into an anthology to showcase some of my friends stories that will never get onto paper without some sort of motivation to do so. Hopefully this thing will get done.
Either way, I like how this cover piece came out.

Here are a couple new pics. I just had some painful teeth work done and felt like drawing a guy with nails for teeth. For some reason drawing this guy makes me realize it could have been a lot worse.

Not sure what I was thinking with this one. Just felt like drawing some deformed humanoid being born from a vat of blood.

Here is some fan art for the film "Dellamorte Dellamore". I saw an early US premiere of this movie at a 24 hour horror-movie marathon and I was hooked. Great visual style with a fun character driven story, worth checking out if you like italian zombie flicks.

Just another fun picture with bloody zombies coming up through the floor. The perspective is all whacky on this one to kind of make it unsettling. I like how the lighting came out with the flourescents as well as the checkered texture on the floor. Gosh I love zombies.

Here are a couple comic book covers I've done this past year.

The Devil's Rejects comic by Rob Zombie. I also did an 8 page interior story which came out pretty cool. Filled with lots of monsters and gore.

"Abra Cadaver", this is a new book coming out by Dead Dog press and written by Dwight L. MacPherson. This is a cool story about Houdini coming back frrom the grave to fight in WWII. Look for this book soon

Electric Frankenstein

Salvatore Canzonieri from the band Electric Frankenstein is putting together a book for Dark Horse comics featuring tons of album art. He is using some of the art I did for Rob Zombie's "Hellbilly Super Deluxe" in the book so I did this piece as a little Thank you.

It was a pretty fast and sloppy piece but I always love getting the chance to draw Frankenstein's monster.

Did another quick doodle while watching TV with some friends and then colored it up at work. The pic doesn't really make any sense but I wanted to draw a girl and a fish monster. I do like how the colors came out on the monsters underbelly but I'm still trying to figure out my technique for water. Some of my past pictures were more successful in that sense.

Here is an homage to HP Lovecraft. His writing and the world he created has been a big influence on me and I knew I could never do his creatures justice by drawing them, but I had to try.
